If I Have a Purpose, Then What Is It?

Bertrand Russell (1870-1972) was a British philosopher, historian, author, and winner of the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize for Literature. He was also a self-proclaimed atheist. One time he made quite a profound statement when one considers his thoughts about God. He said, “Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.”1 Russell was onto something.

The Devolution of Truth

One of the iconic legends of our day was Alex Trebek’, who hosted the TV game show Jeopardy for 37 years.  He died on November 8, 2020.  Among the many tributes which were written about him was that of Stanford University student Avi Gupta, the Teen Tournament champion for 2019.  Regarding her experience on Jeopardy  she wrote, “On his [Trebek’s] Jeopardy there were no alternative facts.  An incorrect answer was met with a stern “ooh, sorry.” This meant that for Trebek the answer to the clue was either right or wrong – not based on what the contestant believed to be true or wanted to be true, but what was absolutely true.

I Only Have One Job

With the hugely popular television series The Crown, along with other series and documentaries making the Royal Family in London seem quite accessible to the average Joe and Joette in the US and around the world, when Prince Phillip died April 9, 2021 it was as if an old friend had passed away.
